Epistudios were commissioned by Knight Frank to produce a video-art installation at Exchange Tower in the Perth CBD. Our concept was titled ‘Patterns of WA’ and celebrates Western Australia’s natural and raw beauty through featuring aerial imagery of 26 iconic locations around the state. The concept was inspired by the natural stone marble tiles present on the floor and walls in the Exchange Tower lobby, mirroring the lines and contours of the WA landscape when viewed from the air.
Our intention was for the artwork to add a sense of movement and energy to the space without being over-bearing or demanding people’s attention. Key was making sure the wall or ‘canvas’ didn’t feel like a conventional rectangular ‘cinema screen’ in the way that cinema or TV does. Therefore, the aerial imagery is projected through a series of abstract masks which give the impression that the light/image is being brushed or splattered on to the wall like paint or ink. This meant hand-producing over 150 green ink masks, through which the aerial imagery is superimposed.
Services and Solutions Provided:
The finished installation is a 6 x 6 metre projection which plays for 12 hours a day. The entire scope consists of 26 video loops, playing for a week at a time, each featuring a different Western Australian location. All of the video content is shot and edited by the team at Epistudios. This project involved thousands of kilometres travelled by road, and resulted in upwards of 300 hours of raw content including the Kimberly, Broome, Karratha, Kalbarri, Geraldton, Abrolhos, Kalgroorlie, Perth, Margaret River Region, Augusta and Esperance to name a few.
The installation is ongoing and can be visited Monday to Friday at Exchange Tower, 2 The Esplanade Perth. Make sure you stay a while and enjoy a dam good coffee at the cafe in the lobby 🙂
